Reporting to the Engineering Manager, the Mechanical Engineer for Primary Upgrading will provide mechanical engineering support to multi-disciplinary teams responsible for the Horizon Upgrader Project. This role will have significant leadership accountability during construction, pre-commissioning, commissioning, and start-up of the facilities.
Specific accountabilities include, but are not limited to:
-Supervise, coordinate and inspect the efforts of the EPC Contractor(s) in the area of mechanical engineering for piping systems (piping hydraulics, sizing, loading, supports, stress analysis, etc.) and pressure vessels (heat exchangers, boilers, heavy-walled vessels)
-Analyze and bring to the Project Engineer and Engineering Manager’s attention any deviation from design standards, industry codes and/or Canadian Natural/ Horizon engineering practices and applicable procedures as well as input to resolution of non-conformances.
-Review and endorse field changes being proposed by the main EPC Contractor and /or their subcontractors.
-Perform regular walk down inspections of the piping systems (or partial systems) to review completeness and compliance with project specs, in order to release them for hydrotest and pre-commissioning.
-Adopt, maintain and apply Project Supplemental standards and design practices consistent with Company engineering procedures and standards and provide guidance to Contractor on specific applications within their assigned work package.
-Foster a productive and open communication with the other project teams of Upgrading and other Horizon business units that may influence or may be influenced by our activities.
-Maintain a technical link with other Mechanical Engineers within Upgrading and other units in Horizon to ensure consistency with all Canadian Natural’s practices and standards.
Employment Requirements
-Five to eight years experience in a mechanical engineering role within an oil refinery facility is preferred
-A degree in Mechanical Engineering and registration or eligibility for registration as a Professional Engineer in Alberta.
-Project experience, as well as a background in EPC Lump Sum and Reimbursable contract schemes is preferred
-Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
-Proven analytical abilities along with exceptional problem solving skills.
