My English School (MES) is a privately owned English school located in Gifu City, Central Japan. MES was established in 1993 when there became a need for children’s English lessons to be taught by native speakers of English. We have now grown to have an enrolment of over 700 students and a staff of more than 15 , including 7 foreign teachers. Owned by Chris (NZ) and two Japanese partners.
Gifu City. Located 20 minutes by train from Nagoya , Gifu is small for Japanese standards with a population of about 400 000. The beauty of Gifu lies with the abundance of nature surrounding he city. Flowing through the north part of Gifu is the Nagara River, which, remarkably for Japan is mostly unpolluted; a great swimming spot in the hot summer. While Gifu City itself is mainly flat, surrounding the city there are many hills and mountains covered in trees and forestry. Lovely to look at, and of course ideal for hiking or mountain biking for the outdoor types. Further to the North, there are mountain ranges which are covered in snow during the winter, making it just a couple of hours drive to some great ski fields.
Like most of Japan, Gifu has extremes of weather in the 4 seasons. The winter is cold and we usually have 5 or ten days of snowfall in Gifu. Summer is very hot and humid, especially in August where most days average around 35 degrees (C). From July to September is also the typhoon season where on average one or two typhoons will pass through Japan sometimes close to Gifu. Spring and autumn are mild and very pleasant.
